Party Voting

Dan Coats is a loyal republican polling at a 93% party voting record, one of the highest in the party behind those such as Thune and Paul. Out of the 86 bills Coats has cosponsored, in 2013, only 24% of the bills were introduced by a member not of the republican party.GovTrack.us The Washington Post has a chart displaying some key issues that Coats has voted against his party for. Such votes include a Farm Bill and a Gun Privacy Bill, both issues that if passed would be favorable to his constituency.

Dan Coats' Interests

Dan Coats received a 100% rating from Campaign For Working Families. Coats constantly speak out on how he has and still hopes to make jobs within his states. This is a major issue that Coats has put on his main agenda since reentering the senate in 2010. Coats also received a rating of 86% from Financing and Banking. This ranking comes as no surprise as Bank of American was on of Coats' biggest contributors to his campaign in 2010 and is still a major interest group for the senator. Vote Smart

Coats vs. Obama

Coats and Obama have a very love hate relationship, if you take out the love part. Coats is constantly speaking out against actions Obama has done, will be doing, or is working on. Coats, supported by senator Rubio, challenged Obama and his power to ‘unilaterally’ lift Cuba sanction. The Washington Times Coats Facebook page is also littered with articles of how he does not support the president and how basically any other actions than that of which the president is taking would be better.

It remains an unpopular, massive intrusion of the federal government into the individual lives of Hoosiers. As the Senate considers a budget plan this week, we have an excellent opportunity to set up a framework to repeal and replace this disastrous law once and for all.” Dan Coats

Dan Coats 2010 Election

Dan Coats Return to the Senate

Dan Coats returned to the senate in 2010 after he had served in both the house and senate in the 1990's. Coats had retired from politics after his first full term as senator but returned to the senate saying he had some business he'd left unfinished. During his bid for his old seat back The Washington post wrote an article displaying Coats success during the Indiana primary stating that "Former senator Dan Coats triumphed in Indiana's Republican Senate primary..... beating out two candidates who had sought to upend the longtime legislator." Coats defeated Marlin Stutzman and John Hostetter during the primary. Coats lead with 39 percent of the votes with Stutzman claiming 30 percent and Hostetter mustering up 22 percent. The Washington Post With the primary out of the way Coats was to face Brad Ellsworth. Ellsworth had been in the House since 2006. Coats defeated Ellsworth with a victory margin of 58 percent to 39 percent. The New York Times

Whats Ahead for Senator Dan Coats

Coats will be up for reelection in 2016. Though the question if he is going to run is still up for debate, Dan Coats is still regarded as a safe candidate for the 2016 senatorial elections. An Indiana newspaper, the IndyStar, states that though "Coats has not officially announced that he will seek re-election....Sen. Dan Coats seems headed to a free ride to his party's nomination in 2016."IndyStar
If Coats does seek re-election in 2016 he should not have to face Tea Party challengers in 2016 "nor that a Democrat would have good odds at unseating him, even in a presidential election cycle."Smart Politics There are no official reports for who will could be challenging Coats but republicans are keeping their eyes on democrat Evan Bayh. Evan Bayh is a former senator and governor who seems to be getting overly excited about the 2016 senate race. The Courier Press
Even if Bayh runs Coats has an upper hand in the race as Indiana is red state that almost always tends to vote republican. As seen when the state voted for Romney in the 2012 presidential election 270 to Win

- Dan does not approve of the current Iran deals that the Obama administration has been making, he inquires that there will be 'grave consequences' to these deals.
- Coats biggest issue with the government is the way we spend money and the increased debt we get ourselves into. Coats new hopes is to speak weekly on programs/ activities that are wasteful and could be cut. Coats is on the Finance Committee in the Senate.
- On February 25th, 2015 Coats along with other senate supporters re-proposed a bill that rewards anyone for information that leads to the capture or killing of ISIL members that had a part in the death of four Americans.

          Into the Pan For Dan

Republican Senator for Indiana, Dan Coats, is up for reelection in 2016. Rumors have be circulating the senator and his intents to run again for the 2017 senatorial seat.  On December 8th, 2012 the Courier and Press released an article stating that Senator Coats "hosted a table of seven key political operatives and funders Sept. 25 at Amalfi Ristorante Italiano in Indianapolis, where he told them that he intends to be on the ballot."  The Courier and Press continued on accounting for Senator Coats fundraiser at the Meridian Hills Country Club, also in Indianapolis. Those present at during the fundraiser were those of the "Coats Club" "who pledged annual contributions to the senator's campaign account."The Courier and Press  With such support and his new opportunity at a getting a seat on the Finance Committee its hard to believe Coats would not run again.  Coats himself stated that "I think I'm in line for chairmanship of the Joint Economic Committee.... There will be some key subcommittees on Appropriations that I'll have the opportunity to be the chairman of." As put on WishTv.com "Coats did make it clear that he had no desire to continue on in the Senate. But the likelihood of Coats campaign in 2016 is definitely greater now than it was before." Coats is a currently a member of the Finance Committee, Joint Economic Committee, and Select Intelligence Committee. Coats was also recently named the Senate Republican Whip Team.

Franking Privileges

During Coats first run for senator his opponent Baron Hill accused Coat "as being the most expensive senator in Indiana history." During this race Dan cost taxpayers $1.8 million for his use of the Franking Privileges. That was back in 1998. The amount is surly to have increased during his last election though the exact amount is uncertain. Chicago Tribune

Dan Coats in Washington

Dan Coats is one who wishes to see America get a grip on its finances as well as create jobs and ensure safe boards. Dan Coats recently released a statement on the presidents veto on the bipartisan bill for the Keystone pipeline. Coats stated that "instead of signing this pro-growth solution into law, resident Obama elected to say no to progress and yes to politics. This is a purely political veto that will further cement frustration with Washington. The president's veto is a missed opportunity for everyone but corporate environmental extremists." Coats viewed this bill as a way to generate thousands of American jobs and inject billions into the economy while keeping gas prices at a more stable price. Coats also bashed the president by posting a link to Fed Hiatt's page, A Credibility Gap, where Hiatt doubts the presidents ability to handle ISIS and the threat they pose to Americans.
In October of 2014 Coats proposed the Counterterrorism Border Security Enhancement Act. This Act would address how to strengthen boarder security along with reevaluating some issues with the Visa Waiver Program.
Coats has also put forth an Amendment for a Balanced Budget
He has also publicly announced his support for the bipartisanship for the Keystone Pipe Line.
Dan Coats and Marco Rubio have teamed up to challenge President Obama's ability to lift the Cuban sanctions.
